HOUSTON ? KHOU 11 News anchor Lisa Hernandez was off on Tuesday evening celebrating a very big event ? she?s engaged!

Hernandez and her boyfriend Joel Blank, a Broadcast Coordinator for the Houston Rockets, enjoyed a small acoustic concert by the Goo Goo Dolls on Tuesday at the Mix 96.5 studios.

When the music ended, Blank popped the question.

?I said a long time ago that when you plus me, equals we -- we would become unstoppable,? Blank said. ?And on our first date you said we both went on our last first date. Today I'm going to make sure that's possible.?

Hernandez was surprised but she said yes. Congratulations to the couple.

As Obama Admin Pushes Peace Process, Abbas Vows No Israelis in Palestine: ?Racist and Hateful Vision?

While his negotiators are in Washington meeting with Israeli officials and Secretary of State John Kerry, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas laid out his vision for a future Palestinian state in which he insists no Israelis will be allowed to remain.

"In a final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli - civilian or soldier - on our lands," Abbas said in a briefing to mostly Egyptian journalists while on a visit to Cairo Monday.

Already Israelis are criticizing Abbas's statement. The right-wing Israeli news site Arutz 7 had this headline: "Abbas: Palestine will be Judenrein: PA [Palestinian Authority] head presents reporters with a racist and hateful vision of a future Palestinian state." Judenrein was a term used by the Nazis in promoting a Germany cleansed of Jews.

Arutz 7 points out that even today "Jews are not permitted to live inside the PA [Palestinian Authority]-controlled territory, and the sale of land to Jews is punishable by death."

While Palestine will be "Judenrein," Arutz 7 also notes that Israel will remain "anything but 'Arabrein.' Arabs make up about 20% of the Jewish state, enjoy full equal rights and regularly elect representatives to the Knesset who openly despise the state in whose parliament they serve, support terrorists and issue calls to their fellow Arabs to rise up against the Jewish state."

Abbas on Monday was equally adamant about the future of east Jerusalem, which Israel considers to be part of its united capital city.

"We've already made all the necessary concessions," Abbas said according to Reuters.

"East Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Palestine ... if there were and must be some kind of small exchange (of land) equal in size and value, we are ready to discuss this - no more, no less," he said.

Continuing along Abbas's reasoning, if no Israelis are allowed to live in east Jerusalem, it would most likely mean that access for Jews to their most holy site, the Western Wall and the Temple Mount, would be severely limited.

Abbas's Israeli-free Palestine comment is similar to one made two years ago by the PLO Ambassador to the United States from which Palestinian officials later tried to distance themselves.

PLO Ambassador Maen Areikat said at a 2011 meeting with reporters that any future Palestinian state should be free of Jews.

"After the experience of the last 44 years of military occupation and all the conflict and friction, I think it would be in the best interest of the two people to be separated," Areikat said, according to USA Today which reported two years ago that he was responding to a question about the rights of minorities in a future state.

Former National Security Council Official Elliott Abrams said then that Palestine would thus be the first state since Nazi Germany to officially prohibit Jews or any other faith.

One of the Palestinian preconditions for restarting peace talks moderated by the U.S. was a total freeze on any construction in Israeli communities in Judea, Samaria and east Jerusalem, a condition to which the Israeli government has not agreed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government on Sunday approved the release of 104 long-serving Palestinian prisoners, many of them with Israeli blood on their hands meeting one of the Palestinians' preconditions for the resumption of talks.

Abbas said that he would not support a symbolic gesture of freezing construction in smaller settlements, while Israel would continue to build up larger Israeli communities in the territory it captured during the 1967 war.

"There was a request, 'We'll only build here, what do you think?' If I agreed, I would legitimize all the rest (of the settlements). I said no. I said out loud and in writing that, to us, settlements in their entirety are illegitimate," he said.

While Abbas says he would like to see no Israeli residents or security forces in a future Palestinian state, he is open to a UN peacekeeping-style arrangement like exists presently on Israel's borders with Egypt, Lebanon and Syria.

"An international, multinational presence like in Sinai, Lebanon and Syria - we are with that," he said.

Past Israeli governments have voiced a desire to maintain control of the Jordan Valley border area with Jordan in order to keep weapons out that could be used by terrorists, even if it were to hand land from Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) to the Palestinians.

But Abbas says that instead NATO forces could be deployed there "as a security guarantee to us and them."

Those participating in the talks are Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Netanyahu aide Yitzhak Molcho and Palestinian Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat and Mohammed Shtayyeh. As TheBlaze reported Monday, pro-Israel bloggers are questioning the intentions of Shtayyeh who displays on his Facebook page a full map of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza emblazoned with the word "Palestine."

Kerry has visited the Middle East six times leading up to the resumption of talks in Washington this week after a three year hiatus.

Bradley Manning's Wikileaks case verdict coming Tuesday

By Medina Roshan

(Reuters) - The verdict in the court-martial of Army Private First Class Bradley Manning, accused of the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history, will be read on Tuesday, the presiding judge said on Monday.

Manning, who is accused of spilling secrets to the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy website, is charged with 21 criminal counts, the most serious of which, aiding the enemy, carries a life sentence.

Judge Colonel Denise Lind, who presided over Manning's court-martial in Fort Meade, Maryland and began deliberations on Friday, said she plans to read the verdict at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The sentencing phase is slated to begin on Wednesday.

Manning's lawyers have maintained that he is a whistleblower, and not a traitor as the government claims. He wanted to provoke a broader debate on U.S. military and diplomatic policy out of concern for fellow Americans, the defense asserted.

Prosecutors said the 25-year-old intelligence analyst from Crescent, Oklahoma, aided the enemy by releasing more than 700,000 documents through WikiLeaks. They said the short, bespectacled Manning had betrayed the trust his nation put in him when he released documents on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Manning was arrested in May 2010 while serving in Iraq. He chose a trial by a military judge, rather than a panel of military jurors.

Africa: U.S. Takes Stock of Scalable Agricultural Technologies

A database of agricultural technologies that may be good candidates for widespread adaptation and adoption to improve food production is under development by Feed the Future, USAID's global hunger and food security initiative.

The Scalable Agricultural Technologies Inventory, hosted on Feed the Future's Agrilinks website, is collecting information that could help groups working with farmers to find technologies that can scale up to greater numbers of smallholders. It is divided into seven categories including 'post-harvest losses', 'livestock and aquaculture' and 'ICT and insurance'.

Feed the Future says it is part of a "deepening engagement" with US government bilateral missions, country partners, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research and others to expand efforts "to drive widespread adaptation, dissemination and adoption of critical agricultural technologies".

Julie Howard, chief scientist at the Bureau for Food Security, which leads the implementation of Feed the Future, says "keeping the pipeline full" of research is crucial, and adds that there has been "a dark period" during the economic recession, where funding for food production programmes has been cut severely.

"We feel the information is not getting out about technology and part of that has been because of this significant drop in funding after a big push on agriculture in the 1970s and 1980s," she says.

Howard adds: "We have asked scientists and others to fill it out without referencing papers and journals - just to include their best guesses on innovation and to put this all in one place".

The inventory has a comments section that Feed the Future hopes will give a steer on which topics are the most popular and what needs more information.

Rob Bailey, a food security research fellow at Chatham House, United Kingdom, says the inventory may "help stakeholders identify technology and providers - this is good but it is a small part of the jigsaw puzzle".

He says: "There is a much more complex set of requirements [to scale up innovations]. Agriculture is dependent on individual circumstances - on soil, microclimate and crops, and on how farmers access markets. Farmers need to be in an enabling environment to help them adapt to new technologies."

Feed the Future is a US$3.5 billion programme that the United States hopes will help some 60 countries transform their agricultural sectors to grow enough food to sustainably feed their populations.

Its launch marked a change in US foreign policy away from donating homegrown food, which was widely criticised as boosting US farmers and transport companies. Feed the Future has greater emphasis on countries and entrepreneurs drawing up their own plans for development.

In Tanzania, for example, up to 80 per cent of Feed the Future's resources for the country will be focused on the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor. This is an area where it is hoped promoting clusters of profitable agribusinesses that incorporate small-scale farmers could prove successful.

PES 2014 is coming to the 3DS? in Japan

July 28th, 2013 Posted in 3DS, News, Posted by Brian

PES 2014 was announced earlier this year, but Konami made no mention of a 3DS version. The game?s European community manager blamed poor sales of last year?s iteration for the lack of support this year.

What makes things particularly strange is that we?re now hearing that PES 2014 is actually coming to the 3DS in Japan, where the series is known as ?Winning Eleven?. An official website, accessible here, confirms that a 3DS version is in fact heading to Japan.

So what?s the deal here? A 3DS version of PES 2014 is only releasing in Japan? That may be so, but it?s rather odd how Konami previously gave the indication that the game wasn?t in development for Nintendo?s handheld.

New whipray species identified by its DNA

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Biologists have analysed tissue samples of 115 spotted whiprays of the Himantura genus, collected in various parts of the Indio-Pacific region. By means of genetic markers -- as opposed to morphological criteria only -- the scientists were able to describe these leopard-skin whiprays in detail and demonstrate that they are isolated from each other in terms of reproduction. They have also discovered a new species that they call Himantura tutul, which belongs to a genetic line that is totally distinct from the three other species that are known in the same group: H. leoparda, H. uarnak and H. undulata. They frequent the same costal habitats but occupy different ecological niches.

Movie Review: How Issaq murdered 'Romeo and Juliet' - Firstpost

So here?s what we know about the Benares in which director Manish Tewari sets Issaq. There are more staircases in the city than there are mosquitoes in Kolkata. Its men spit compulsively and everywhere. Wiry old sadhus have elaborate chemistry labs with test tubes, beakers and flasks in their backyards. These sadhus can outdo Pooja Bedi with their sex-life advice, and they levitate with the same ease with which an average Indian man burps or scratches his crotch. Benares is also under grave threat from the Maoists who, being as imaginative as the film?s director, aren?t so pedestrian as to behave like real-life Maoists; they smuggle sand.

Background set, let?s move on to the story of the film. No spoilers here, just what the director has said already said ? Issaq is an adaptation of Shakespeare?s much-adapted Romeo and Juliet. The counterparts of Capulet and Montagues are Kashyap and Mishra. (If you missed this stunning usage of alliteration here, you should probably never watch a Bollywood film ever again.)

Courtesy: Facebook

Courtesy: Facebook

The Kashyaps have a girl, Bachchi. The Mishras? boy is called Rahul. Rahul, played by Prateik, is your average small-town lover boy who struggles to speak in English and hits on anything that has breasts. The only redeeming quality about our soon-to-be Romeo are those bronzed, toned biceps, tailor-made for banian commercials. Bachchi, played by newcomer Amyra Dastur, is a pretty girl who looks inexplicably pleased throughout the film.

The duo meet at Benares? counterpart of a masque ball: Holi party. At this party, Rahul drinks bhang and stares into the camera creepily. Bachchi, on the other hand, reveals her inner rebel by wearing a pair of horns alongside her salwar kameez and stoically waist-jerks to the music of dhol. I hope feminist hearts are bursting with joy at the mere thought of this uplifting demonstration of girl power. Drunk boy sneaks up to girl in prayer room and kisses her. This, ladies and gentlemen, is romantic. Because there?s nothing even mildly disturbing about an inebriated man forcibly kissing an unknown girl after barging into her house, right? All?s fair in love and war in Benares. Haven?t you seen Raanjhanaa?

Then we meet the villains: the aforementioned sand-smuggling Maoists led by one Tamil man called ?Madrasi? (a red-eyed, perennially-grumbling evil mama played by Ravi Kissen), a stepmom (Rajyashree Badola) and a fair, chubby-cheeked policeman call Prithvi. The Kashyaps and the Mishras are in the business of capturing Benares?s ghats. They are also in the extremely profitable business of sand smuggling. How does sand smuggling work? SUV-filled goons drive on to endless stretches of sand and camp there, taking truck-full of sand and silt away. Given how prolific these men are shown to be in Issaq, you?d imagine Benares to be a desert of Thar?s proportions. Anyway, so this squabbling over who gets to smuggle more mud/sand make the families sworn enemies.

Meanwhile, Bacchi and Rahul fall in love. Their moment under Cupid?s sun is not announced by a random song. It comes with the girl?s earth shattering declaration to her lover that she is a virgin. Boy responds with a disturbing expression on his face you usually associate with 12-year-olds watching porn for the first time. Girl finds nothing creepy about it and then they end up singing a song together.

The families are outraged, the sand smuggling Maoist is out for a kill and the policeman wants the girl. The least absurd thing that happens in the rest of the film is when a young Maoist shoots a bunch of policemen, chanting he wants Katrina Kaif.

We?re not yet sure what Prateik?s talents are as an actor except denouncing surnames. And the most memorable role he has played till date was only second in importance to Genelia D?Souza?s hair clips in Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa. In Issaq, Prateik mistakes himself to be in a Nike commercial. He runs in more languid slo-mo than Kajol in ?Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam? and he jumps over more rooftops than Akshay Kumar has in for Thums Up. And then there?s his dialogue delivery, which is a scary reminder of how Katrina Kaif mangled lines in Boom. Not much is required of our Juliet. Dastur looks facewash-ad fresh and pretty. She wears a whole bunch of nice kurtis throughout the film. Brownie points to her for that.

One wonders, however, what is a greater tragedy ? Romeo and Juliet or what Issaq made of that classic love story.

Church leaders urge strong commitment to peace from Israel and Palestine

AP

A Palestinian man looks out over buildings in the Rafah refugee camp destroyed by Israeli airstrikes, southern Gaza Strip.

Israel and Palestine must make every effort to resume talks on a negotiated settlement, leaders in the Church of England and Roman Catholic Church have said.

The call came in a joint statement from the Church of England's lead bishop on the Middle East peace process, Bishop Michael Langrish, and the Roman Catholic Church's spokesman on international affairs, Bishop Declan Lang.

US Secretary of State John Kerry announced last week that Israeli and Palestinian leaders had reached an agreement establishing a basis for the resumption of peace talks.

The bishops appealed to both sides of the conflict to take full advantage of the opportunity for fresh talks and "refrain from actions that might see this chance lost".

"This conflict has for far too long been an open wound that has frustrated the hopes and aspirations of both communities to live in dignity, peace and security," they said.

"Now is the time to escape the prism of pain and fear through which Christian, Jew and Muslim see each other in the Holy Land."

They added: "The prospect for securing a negotiated resolution has never looked so daunting but neither has it been so necessary. The cost of failure is too unbearable to imagine."
