Toledo tops Air Force 42-41 in wild Military Bowl shootout

WASHINGTON D.C.???If you like offense, the 25,042 fans in RFK Stadium were treated to a special afternoon Wednesday by Air Force and Toledo. The Falcons and Rockets ran up and down the field with little opposition.

But, in the end, Toledo held on for a 42-41 victory in the Military Bowl after Air Force gambled trying for a two-point conversion with 52 seconds left. The Falcons' David Baska, the holder on the fake conversion, pitched wildly to Parker Herrington, who couldn't corral the ball on an option play to the left. The ball bounced out of bounds in the end zone. Air Force then tried an onside kick, but Toledo recovered and ran out the clock.

Toledo scored first and never trailed in a wild back-and-forth

contest, as Air Force kept putting the pressure on.

The Rockets' defense pinned Air Force in its territory for much of the fourth quarter. A 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Terrance Owens to receiver Bernard Reedy put Toledo ahead, 42-35, with 5:01 to go. But, as they did all game, the Falcons responded, scoring on a fourth-down pass from quarterback Tim Jefferson to a wide-open Zach Kauth to make it 42-41. Coach Troy Calhoun then called for the fake conversion.

There were many bowl-game highs for the Falcons. Jefferson's touchdown pass to Jonathan Warzeka in the second quarter was his first in four postseason games.

Toledo coach Matt Campbell deserted his two-quarterback system most of the way. He stayed mainly with Owens, and the sophomore left-hander delivered with big plays.

Air Force scored late in the second quarter to tied the game at 28. The Rockets took a 35-28 lead on Jermaine Robinson's 37-yard interception return of a tipped pass. The Falcons tied the score at 35 on fullback Mike DeWitt's two-yard slant to the left side later in the period.

There was hardly time to catch a breath in the first half.

The Rockets and Falcons moved up and down the field in just about

every way imaginable, from big kick returns, to long runs to big passing plays. Toledo's 87-yard kickoff return by Eric Paige with 2:17 left in the first period put the Rockets up 21-7. By that point the Falcons already had given up a 17-yard touchdown pass by Owens and a 41-yard touchdown run by Thomas.

But, as if an alarm had gone off, the Falcons woke up.

Jefferson signaled there was some life with a 22-yard scoring run that made it 14-7 before the kickoff return by Page. The Falcons scored three times in the second quarter to knot the game by halftime.

Tailback Asher Clark scored from the one on fourth down to tie the score at 21. After Owens hit a 49-yard touchdown pass to put the Rockets up 28-21, Jefferson threw a 37-yard score to Warzeka with 2:07 left in the period.

Kahne takes flak after breastfeeding rant on Twitter

NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne hasn?t gotten this kind of attention on the Internet since his brief encounter with Paris Hilton at an L.A. night club in 2009.

That was when Hilton, the hotel/resort heiress/reality TV and so on star, reportedly ventured that Kahne, winner of 12 races at NASCAR?s top level, was ?cute.?

But the sentiments being expressed now aren?t quite as complimentary after Kahne ranted on Twitter about breastfeeding in public. The more recent encounter reportedly took place at a grocery store and has prompted hundreds of responses ? ranging from supportive to outrage.

In a series of Tweets, huffingtonpost.com reported, the 31-year-old driver said the sight caused him to lose his appetite and his desire to continue shopping.

According to mediate.com, Kahne removed at least two of the remarks by Wednesday morning, but not before posting something less than flattering about the upset mother, who had proposed that Kahne reconsider his remarks.

In the 2012 season, Kahne will drive for NASCAR's most successful team, Hendrick Motorsports.

U.S. presidential hopeful Ron Paul isn't anti-Israel, former aide says

Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul is not anti-Israel and does not advocate Israel's abolishment as a Jewish state, a former aide told Haaretz on Tuesday.

The remarks by Dr. Leon Hadar, an Israeli and U.S. citizen, who used to be among Paul's foreign policy advisors during his 2008 presidential campaign, came a day after another former Paul aide, Eric Dondero, wrote in his blog that the presidential hopeful ?wishes the Israeli state did not exist at all.?

?His view is that Israel is more trouble than it is worth, specifically to the America taxpayer,? Dondero added.

Ron Paul - Reuters - 22.12.2011

Responding to the column, CBS News quoted Ron Paul's spokesman Jesse Benton as saying that, "Eric Dondero is a disgruntled former staffer who was fired for performance issues."

"He has zero credibility and should not be taken seriously," Benton added.

Speaking with Haaretz on Tuesday, Hadar discounted Paul's characterization as anti-Israel, saying: "He is against Israel as I am against January. He is just against foreign aid, and does not see any reason to grant an aid to the country that is a member of OECD."

"We should remember it's the primaries, and the Republican party establishment is not happy about his popularity, because on many issues his positions run contrary to the traditional party's agenda," Hadar added.

The former aide also indicated that Rep. Paul was in favor of "economic cooperation with Israel, he was interested in the economic reforms in Israel."

"He will be glad to see the conflict resolved and he said it's the right of Israel to attack Iran if it thinks that is necessary - but it shouldn't expect the U.S. to clean the mess," he said, adding that Paul is "very familiar with Israel's history. I didn't hear his conversations with his former aide, but I personally have never heard him say anything against Israel or the Jews."

Referring to claims according to which Paul was in favor of "handing Israel back" to the Arabs, Hadar said it was "absurd to say he is more supportive of Arabs or Iran than Israel - he just thinks the U.S. shouldn't meddle in other countries issues."

"I think it's quite pro-Israeli, because the U.S. won't stay in the Middle East forever, and Israel should figure out how to deal with its challenges," Hadar said, adding that there "is little doubt the current campaign against him and the attempts to paint him as anti-Israeli might cause him harm among the Evangelicals, whose support is more significant during the primaries than the Republican Jewish support."

Texas gunman was dressed as Santa, police say

A man suspected of opening fire on a family Christmas celebration outside Dallas was dressed in a Santa Claus suit when he killed six people and then himself, police said on Monday.

Authorities continued their search for clues in Grapevine, a Dallas suburb dubbed the ?Christmas Capital of Texas,? to explain the Sunday murder-suicide rampage that left seven shot dead among unwrapped holiday presents.

More related to this story

The dead ? four women and three men between the ages of 15 and 58 ? were found on Sunday morning in an apartment living-room by police answering a voiceless 911 emergency call, authorities said.

?By all appearances, they?re all part of the same family,? said Sergeant Robert Eberling of the Grapevine police department, adding that some were related through marriage.

Two pistols were recovered from the home, said Sgt. Eberling, who called it a ?gruesome crime scene? and the worst outburst of gun violence in the town?s history.

Authorities were waiting on autopsy reports before releasing identities, a potential motive and details on what exactly happened inside the home, Sgt. Eberling said.

?We have a petty good idea who these folks were, and we?re trying to work through contacting other family members so we can better piece together what took place and why it took place,? he said.

Sgt. Eberling said the suspected shooter was dressed in a Santa Claus suit but gave no further details.

The 911 caller never spoke to police, and officers did not see the telephone when they arrived, officials said. Sgt. Eberling said he believed police had to kick in the door to enter. No neighbours reported hearing gunshots, he said.

Sgt. Eberling said the victims appeared to have just opened Christmas presents when the shooting started, and there was no sign of forced entry or a struggle.

Circumstances of the shooting remained sketchy, but Sgt. Eberling said it appeared as though the bloodbath unfolded during a family holiday celebration.

No one was found alive by police arriving at the home, he said.

A community of about 46,000 people some 32 kilometres northwest of downtown Dallas, Grapevine is known for its wine-tasting salons and was proclaimed by the state Senate as the ?Christmas Capital of Texas? for its abundance of annual holiday-season events.

?This is obviously a terrible tragedy,? Mayor William Tate said on Sunday night in a statement.

?The fact that it happened on Christmas makes it even more tragic.?

Why Washington Redskins Fans Should Feel Good About 2012 Season

Although we're all aware that injuries are a part of the game and that all teams are forced to adjust, even a Cowboys fan would have a little bit of sympathy for the Redskins and the way the injury bug attacked the team this season.?

I'm not trying to sound like a crybaby with it or anything, but it seemed like one injury after another for the Redskins this season?all at key positions.?

Running back Tim Hightower blows out his knee, safety LaRon Landry hasn't been right since last season, left guard Kory Lichtensteiger blows out his knee, tight end Chris Cooley drops to IR, wide receiver Anthony Armstrong is set back early, rookie Jarvis Jenkins blows out a knee, rookie wideout Leonard Hankerson begins to shine and he hits IR, safety O.J. Atogwe gets a rough start while recovering and the list goes on. It almost didn't seem fair.?

The only good news that can come from such injuries is the fact that all of these guys had time to heal over the course of the season (if they went down early) and the upcoming offseason to heal and prepare for next season.?

Again, I'm not blaming a 5-11 or 6-10 record on injuries alone. But I'm also not denying that it makes a season exponentially harder. And to add fuel to the fire, dummies like Trent Williams and Fred Davis don't help the situation by earning suspensions for a quarter of the season.?

iPhone outselling other smartphones in UK in run up to Christmas (Digital Trends)

If mobile phone sales in the UK are anything to go by, Apple will be having a very happy Christmas this year.

Its iPhone 4S device was the best selling smartphone in the four weeks up to December 9, according to data released by market research firm GfK. The Financial Times reported that the phone, which was released by the Cupertino company in October, accounted for nearly a quarter of all smartphone sales in the country during the period.

In a list of the top 15 smartphones sold in the first week of this month, GfK said there were five versions of Apple???s mobile device, accounting for over 37 percent of the market.

While Apple will be delighted to see its iPhone selling so well in the holiday season, there was also some Christmas cheer for other smartphone manufacturers. Samsung?s Galaxy S II was listed in the number two spot for sales in the first week of December.

And at last, some heartwarming news for Research In Motion, which saw an increase in UK sales of its range of BlackBerry devices in the four weeks up to December 9. Taking three places in the top 10 for sales in the first week of this month were versions of its BlackBerry Curve device.

Nokia, however, will be concerned to learn that its new Lumia phone, its first running Windows Phone Mango, didn?t even make the top 10 ? and that after an advertising campaign which is reported to have cost the company somewhere in the region of $31 million (?20 million). The results of a survey last week showed there is little interest in Nokia?s new device among European consumers, a fact reflected by the latest sales figures. The figures will be a worry for the Finnish firm, which is set to launch its first Lumia phone in the US on January 11.

Smartphone ownership has really taken off in the UK in the last couple of years, almost doubling in the period from February 2010 to August 2011. Forty-six percent of Brits now own such a device, with many more purchasing one for themselves or a loved one over this holiday season.

Take a Quick Financial Checkup Quiz to Find Out If You're on the Right Track [Personal Finance]

Take a Quick Financial Checkup Quiz to Find Out If You're on the Right TrackMost of us are mired in the day-to-day management of our personal finances, and between paying down debt, saving for emergencies, getting enough insurance, and investing properly, it's hard sometimes to see the big picture. CNN Money's quiz can help.

The tool first asks for age and gross annual income, then for each of 7 main financial topics, one or two related questions so it can check the ratios and rules of thumb. For example, enter how much you spend for your monthly housing payment and it will warn you if your payments exceed 28% of your gross income.

Some or even most of these guidelines you likely already know, such as saving 3-6 months for emergencies, but having them all in one place in an easy-to-use tool is great. At the end you'll get a financial health grade and may perhaps better gauge where you're doing well and which areas you need to work on improving.

Run-off, emissions deliver double whammy to coastal marine creatures, UGA study finds

Monday, October 24, 2011

Increasing acidification in coastal waters could compromise the ability of oysters and other marine creatures to form and keep their shells, according to a new study led by University of Georgia researchers.

Their findings will be published in the November 2011 issue of Nature Geoscience. The researchers determined the combined effects of fertilizer runoff carried by the Mississippi River to the northern Gulf of Mexico and excess atmospheric carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels result in an unexpected increase in the acidity of Gulf waters.

"Before, scientists only worried about low oxygen in waters along the coast," said Wei-Jun Cai, a professor of marine sciences in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. "Our paper basically says not only do we need to worry about low oxygen, we also need to worry about acidification."

When plumes of river water rich with nutrients from fertilizer run into coastal waters, phytoplankton thrives. When these algae die, they sink to the sea floor and decompose, releasing carbon dioxide and decreasing the amount of oxygen in the water. The dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with water, forming an acid.

Ocean acidity also increases when excess carbon dioxide released by burning fossil fuels is absorbed from the air at the ocean's surface. The combination of these two sources of carbon dioxide decreases the ocean's ability to neutralize acid, increasing acidity beyond what would be expected from the sum of the individual processes.

As the water becomes more acidic, sea creatures that form carbonate shells or skeletons?from single-celled amoebae to oysters to corals?are less able to produce and maintain these structures. If the acidity of coastal waters continues to increase, Cai and his co-workers predict that by the end of the century these creatures won't be able to form shells.

"Many of our fisheries resources, especially shellfish, are concentrated in areas where rivers discharge onto the coast, like the northern Gulf and the East China Sea, and thus are at risk," said James T. Hollibaugh, UGA Distinguished Research Professor of marine sciences. "And of course there are likely ramifications for fish and animals further up the food chain that depend on these same shellfish for food."

Hollibaugh collaborated with Cai on the project, along with UGA post-doctoral researcher Xinping Hu, graduate students Wei-Jen Huang and Yongchen Wang and doctoral graduate Pingsan Zhao. Additional authors on the paper include Michael C. Murrell and John C. Lehrter of the Environmental Protection Agency Gulf Ecology Division; Steven Lohrenz of University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth; Wen-Chen Chou and Gwo-Ching Gong of the National Taiwan Ocean University; Weidong Zhai, Minhan Dai and Xianghu Guo of Xiamen University; and Kjell Gundersen of the University of Southern Mississippi.

Although their research focused on Gulf of Mexico coastal waters, they extended their findings globally by making the same measurements on the Changjaing (Yangtze) River, the largest river in Asia, where they found similar results.

To minimize future damage to the coastal ocean, Cai and his colleagues recommend that farmers better manage fertilizer use and societies limit fossil fuel use. Their future research will explore seasonal patterns of acidification and its influence on the coastal ecosystem.

Wash. lawmaker found dead at resort hotel

Washington state Sen. Scott White, a transit advocate who quickly rose to a leadership position in the Legislature, was found dead Friday in a hotel room. He was 41.

Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana said in a statement Friday night that the death remains unexplained and that authorities are investigating.

White was discovered by housekeeping staff after he failed to check out of his hotel room at the Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash. An autopsy is being arranged.

KOMO-TV reported that a "sudden heart attack" was suspected.

'Extraordinarily talented leader'
The Democrat represented the state's 46th District, covering northern parts of Seattle. White joined the Senate last year and rose to serve as the Senate's majority whip, advocating for transit issues as a caucus transportation leader. He worked most recently as a project manager at the University of Washington.

"He was an extraordinarily talented leader and an accomplished legislator," Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown said in a statement. "The nobility and honor with which he approached his role as an elected official was rare, and his commitment was unprecedented."

White is survived by his wife and two children.

A native of Olympia, White played football at Timberline High School before going to both Western Washington University and the University of Washington. He worked on the King County Council, rising to serve as chief of staff before getting elected to the state House in 2008 before moving to the Senate two years later.

Gov. Chris Gregoire said White was never afraid to tackle difficult problems.

"I found him to be an absolute pleasure to work with, and a legislator who served his district and the entire state well," Gregoire said. "He had a bright and promising future ahead of him."

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on Saturday easily coasted to a second term, winning in a landslide election after failing to attract any well-known or deep-pocketed opposition.

The 40-year-old Republican overwhelmed nine competitors in the open primary, where a candidate wins the race outright if he or she receives more than 50 percent of the vote. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Jindal had received about 66 percent of the total vote.

His closest competitor, Tara Hollis, a Democrat from north Louisiana, garnered nearly 18 percent of the total vote. All of the other candidates were in single digits.

"I will use every day, every hour of these next four years to make Louisiana the very best that we can be. I don't believe in resting on our past accomplishments. I don't believe in taking time off," Jindal told a packed hotel ballroom of supporters in Baton Rouge.

Jindal piled up $15 million in campaign cash from around the nation and attracted no Democratic challengers with statewide name recognition or fundraising heft. He's had consistently high approval ratings since taking office in 2008.

His win comes amid the virtual collapse of the Democratic Party's clout in the state. In the current term, Republicans have gained control of all seven statewide elected posts and both chambers of the legislature. Hollis was an outsider to the political establishment and was unable to drum up the cash needed to challenge Jindal or mount a big-ticket advertising competition.

The first Indian-American governor in the United States, Jindal is considered by some a possible presidential contender in the future. He recently published a book and regularly appears on national news shows, but he ruled out a 2012 run.

Still, his brand of conservatism and refusal to raise taxes has resonated outside the state. His new term begins in January.

The race that received more attention in Louisiana was the one for lieutenant governor, because the officeholder is next in line should Jindal step down because of his national political ambitions.

Incumbent Jay Dardenne, who took office after a special election last year, had 53 percent of the ballot in defeating Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser with 47 percent , results showed with 99 percent of precincts reporting. Like Jindal, Nungesser was a vocal critic of the federal response to the massive Gulf oil spill.

Gordon Brown Argues For Global Growth Pact, International Financial Standards

The world's major economies are increasingly vulnerable to falling into a global economic downturn unless they can swiftly coalesce to patch up a tattered European financial system and embrace policies aimed at generating vigorous growth, former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned during a meeting with HuffPost editors and reporters on Wednesday.

Brown said that the world's major economies need to agree to a global growth pact and international financial standards in order to escape from an avoidable but increasingly likely global economic downturn.

"Global problems need global solutions," Brown said. "If you can't actually grow your economy, then the danger is that most of the action you take does not achieve the results that you intended it to achieve."

Europe is teetering on the edge of a financial crisis. If Greece defaults on its debt, then other troubled European countries would become more likely to default on their debt as interest rates rise, and European banks holding sovereign debt would be in danger of running out of cash and going bankrupt. As a result, U.S. banks could slash lending, and the American economy could shrink, according to some economists.

While the euro zone has funneled loans to Greece to postpone a default, it has not taken action to restructure Greece's debt, and its bailout fund amounts to only 440 billion euros -- a fraction of the debt of the five European countries in danger of defaulting. A German finance ministry spokesman said on Wednesday that the size of the bailout fund will not be increased, according to Reuters.

Brown, who was prime minister of Britain during the height of the financial crisis between 2007 and 2010, said that European political leaders need to take "radical action" to prevent a global economic downturn.

In Brown's view, world leaders never fully addressed the underlying fundamentals of the financial crisis and are now facing the same persistent problems -- too many banks with too little cash on hand and a lack of knowledge about where money is flowing and how it puts the system at risk. Unless political leaders agree to international financial regulations, he said, major banks will continue to threaten to move elsewhere in a "race to the bottom."

Brown diagnosed the crisis in Europe primarily as a banking and economic growth crisis, dividing himself from northern European leaders who have characterized southern European countries as reckless spenders that now must face severe austerity measures.

Greece's economy has been shrinking since the announcement of austerity measures, and the country has become even less able to pay its debts as tax revenue drops. Conservative politicians in other European countries also have cut or refused to increase spending, and their economies are slowing in response. Even Germany, Europe's largest economy, has seen its growth slow to a halt.

Brown said that European banks are dramatically undercapitalized, putting them in danger of running out of cash and going bankrupt if investors demand their deposits at the same time. Brown's solution is ensuring that the European Financial Stability Facility hold up to $3 trillion in order to bail out European banks if necessary.

In addition to fixing its financial system, Brown said Europe also needs to grow its way out of its economic crisis. To ensure global economic growth, he said that world leaders need to agree on a mechanism that would allow emerging markets to consume more imports and developed economies to produce more exports so that both areas of the world can grow in sync.

Brown's comments come as the global recovery has hit a wall. The American economy grew at a rate of just 1.3 percent in the second quarter of this year, Europe's economy has slowed to a crawl, and even China's export-driven economy has slowed as demand for Chinese goods from other areas of the world has fallen.

Brown also insisted that any international economic plan must include China. He proposed a mutually beneficial deal for the China and U.S. -- China agreeing to increase its historically-low consumer spending and the U.S. agreeing to increase investment in order to ensure that its national economy will grow.

Instead, American political leaders have increasingly blamed China for allegedly claiming American jobs in manufacturing and other areas, as well as keeping its currency artificially cheap compared to the dollar, allowing them to export more of their goods around the world.

Brown warned that a repeat of protectionism from the Great Depression -- in which countries retreated into their own "silos" and devised "self-defeating" solutions -- would ensure a mutually assured economic downturn.

He did not express much optimism as to whether European politicians would rise to the challenge of drafting a visionary global plan for economic growth.

"Every time there's a crisis, they take action that is too little and too late, and so the next time you have to deal with the next problem, it's a bigger problem, and you have to take even more radical action," Brown said. "You move from what was perhaps a manageable problem to a situation that has gone out of control because it hasn't been dealt with adequately."

Despite Records, Apple Misses Wall Street Estimates (NewsFactor)

Despite setting records and offering plenty of profits, Apple's fourth quarter disappointed Wall Street. Apple announced the results of its fiscal 2011 fourth quarter on Tuesday even as the company continued to grieve the loss of its co-founder Steve Jobs.

Apple posted quarterly revenue of $28.27 billion and quarterly net profit of $6.62 billion, or $7.05 per diluted share. That compares with revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 63 percent of the quarter's revenue.

"We are thrilled with the very strong finish of an outstanding fiscal 2011, growing annual revenue to $108 billion and growing earnings to $26 billion," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "Customer response to iPhone 4S has been fantastic, we have strong momentum going into the holiday season, and we remain really enthusiastic about our product pipeline."

Wall Street Not Thrilled

Apple sold 17.07 million iPhones in the quarter, a 21 percent boost over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 11.12 million iPads during the quarter, a 166 percent increase over the year-ago quarter. The company also sold 4.89 million Macs during the quarter, a 26 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter, and 6.62 million iPods, a 27 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The totals represent all-time record Mac and iPad sales in a single quarter.

"We are extremely pleased with our record September quarter revenue and earnings and with cash generation of $5.4 billion during the quarter," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2012, which will span 14 weeks rather than 13, we expect revenue of about $37 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $9.30."

But Wall Street wasn't altogether thrilled. It was the first time Apple failed to meet earnings estimates since September 2004. Part of the problem rested with the iconic iPhone. J.P. Morgan expected Apple to sell 20.6 million iPhones in the quarter. Still, Wall Street analysts expect iPhone sales to set a record in the fourth quarter.

Microscope on Apple

"Apple's past success became the basis for some of the inflated analyst expectations on display this week," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence. "People believe that Apple chronically 'low balls' its guidance, and so the financial analysts typically go well beyond that in their projections."

Sterling noted that Apple grew at a very healthy $28 billion in revenue and posted more than $6 billion in profit -- significant year over year growth but lower than in the past. So Apple beat its own forecasts but not the market's higher consensus expectations.

"Because it's Apple, the market wanted more and nervous investors in the post-Steve Jobs era are looking for any indication of a slow-down in Apple's momentum," Sterling said. "But this cat-and-mouse game of Apple guidance and analyst forecasts shows, in a way, what a circus and ridiculous place the U.S. stock market is today."

But the next quarter looks impressive. With Apple projecting revenue at $37 billion, Sterling figures Wall Street will project more than $40 billion. The more Apple succeeds, he said, the more pressure there is to top itself at ever-higher levels of financial performance.

Ashley Greene: Demi Lovato and I Are Like Jen and Angelina (omg!)

What would Angelina Jolie say?

Ashley Greene has heard a fair share of rumors about herself since making her mark on the Twilight film franchise, but the 24-year-old star prefers not to comment on them, telling Allure magazine's November issue that if she did, she "wouldn't have time for my day job."

PHOTOS: Ashley's sexy style

But Greene is willing to open up about her supposed feud with Demi Lovato, with whom she shares an ex-boyfriend, Joe Jonas. In fact, Greene squashes any rumored bad blood between the two starlets, telling Allure that the pair always got along.

"I'm really happy that she's doing well," Greene says of Jonas' 19-year-old songbird ex, who split from the singer shortly before he hooked up with Greene. "She and I never had a problem with each other, but, you know, it doesn't go away. Jen Aniston still gets asked about Angelina Jolie."

PHOTOS: Jen vs. Angie: Who's the bigger style icon?

Calling it quits with Jonas in March, Greene says she's casting a wide net when it comes to finding her perfect match.

PHOTOS: Hollywood's most eligible singles

"I go through stages," says Greene, who has been linked to Twilight's Jackson Rathbone and Kings of Leon's Jared Followill in the time since breaking things off with Jonas. "Randomly, I'll be attracted to a crazy rocker with tattoos. And I find that I'm extremely attracted to ambition and wit. If it was appropriate to date Michael Sheen, I would, but he and his girlfriend [Rachel McAdams] are so cute."

"And maybe this is 'You want what you can't have' -- Neil Patrick Harris," she tells Allure. "And, oh, Cooper Anderson?.[I mean] Anderson Cooper. I'd be all over that."

GOP candidates spar on border fence during debate (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Republican presidential candidates are debating the merits of a fence along every inch of the United States' border with Mexico, with Texas Gov. Rick Perry saying it isn't the best way to fight illegal immigration.

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said Tuesday she would build a double fence along the southern border. She says the country spends $113 billion each year to provide benefits to illegal immigrants.

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas says the fence is not the answer, agreeing with Perry. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney says a fence would help but the way to cut illegal immigration is to end benefits for them. That was a jab at Perry, who signed a law that provides in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

Packers top Rams to remain NFL's only unbeaten (AP)

GREEN BAY, Wis. ? Don't expect Charles Woodson and the Green Bay Packers' defense to beat themselves up for letting the winless St. Louis Rams pile up yards.

Woodson worries first about points and wins ? and the Packers were just about perfect on both counts Sunday.

Despite giving up 424 yards of offense, Green Bay's defense shut St. Louis out of the end zone in a 24-3 victory that kept the Packers perfect at 6-0.

"Does anybody want to give up a lot of yards? No. But the goal is to win," Woodson said. "We held them to three points today, kept them out of the end zone, which is a goal of ours. There's places where we can get better, we feel like we'll get better, and we'll enjoy this win today."

With Sunday's loss by NFC North rival Detroit, the Packers are the last unbeaten team left in the NFL this season.

But the Packers' defense hasn't been flawless.

Green Bay has been tough in the red zone and made plenty of big plays. But the Packers are having a hard time stopping teams between the 20s. It happened again Sunday.

Sam Bradford was 28 of 44 for 321 yards with an interception for the Rams (0-5). Bradford said moving the ball but failing to score was becoming an unsettling trend for St. Louis.

"It is something that we struggle with all year," Bradford said. "There have been several games that we have been able to move the ball up and down and we get to the red zone, we have silly mistakes that don't allow us to put the ball in the end zone. In this league, if you want to win, you got to score touchdowns."

Bradford's ankle was sore after the game, but he said he wasn't hurt badly.

Rams running back Steven Jackson had 18 carries for 96 yards.

"For whatever reason, we get into the red zone, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot," Jackson said.

The Packers held the Rams to 3 for 13 on third down and 1 for 4 when they went for it on fourth ? more indications that the Packers' defense tightens up when it needs to.

"You give some things, but you buckle down in the times when you're supposed to and get yourself off the field," Woodson said. "I think we had a couple of fourth downs today where we got off the field. Those are the type of things that we're going to have to do during the season. When games are tougher than they are today, you're going to have to make plays and get off the field in crucial situations. And today we did."

Bradford said the Rams have to find ways to avoid getting backed into third-and-long situations.

"It is not easy to pick first downs up when you get yourself into that situation," Bradford said. "When you do it with penalties, it becomes very frustrating. We got to figure out a way, whether it is my communications skills or whether it is guys just tuning in, we've got to figure out a way on first and second down not put ourselves in such a bad situation."

The Packers' offense took control in the second quarter, as Aaron Rodgers threw touchdowns to James Jones, Jordy Nelson and Donald Driver. But Green Bay's offense hit a lull and didn't score in the second half.

"It's a feeling of minor disappointment, I think, in that locker room," Rodgers said. "We just, in the second half, offensively just struggled. The second quarter was great, we put up a lot of points. I think it's encouraging at the same time. It's tough to win in this league, we're 6-0, and have a lot of room for improvement."

Packers coach Mike McCarthy had a mixed reaction to the victory. He bristled at questions about the offense being shut out in the second half, saying, "the last time I checked, when you win by three touchdowns, that's a pretty significant win."

But McCarthy also said the team isn't anywhere near where it wants to be.

"You have to be running on all cylinders, and we're not there yet," McCarthy said. "So fortunately, we're 6-0. We'll continue to work to get there."

Notes: Wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker and linebacker Ben Leber were inactive for St. Louis. Neither was listed on the team's injury report this week. "We weren't trying to send any messages," Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "We just put our the guys out there that we thought would help us win the game." ... It was the Packers' last home game for nearly a month. ... Packers cornerback Sam Shields sustained a head injury after he picked off a Bradford pass in the end zone and was hit hard. McCarthy said Shields was still being evaluated after the game.

Gaddafi gunmen, government forces clash in Libyan capital (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Gunbattles between supporters of deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi and forces of the National Transitional Council (NTC) shook the Libyan capital on Friday, raising fears of an insurgency against the country's new rulers.

The clashes appeared to be isolated and involve only dozens of pro-Gaddafi fighters, but it was the first sign of armed resistance to the NTC in Tripoli since its rebel brigades seized the city and ended Gaddafi's 42-year rule in August.

Hundreds of NTC fighters in pick-up trucks shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) careered toward the Abu Salim neighborhood, a repository of support for Gaddafi, and the two sides exchanged automatic and heavy machinegun fire.

The fighting in Tripoli coincided with prolonged battles in Sirte, where NTC forces are battling pro-Gaddafi fighters holed up in a small area of Gaddafi's home town.

Local people in Tripoli told Reuters that a group of up to 50 armed men had appeared in the Abu Salim district earlier in the day and chanted pro-Gaddafi slogans. NTC men said fighting also broke out in three nearby neighborhoods.

"Gaddafi told them in a message last night to rise up after Friday prayers," said one NTC fighter, Abdullah. "That's why these few people have come out and are causing this problem."

Since he went into hiding after rebel forces captured Tripoli on August 23, Gaddafi has released a number of audio recordings calling on loyalists to fight back.

Two Gaddafi supporters and one NTC fighter were killed in Friday's violence in Tripoli, NTC official Abdel Razak al Oraidi said during a press conference in the capital.

"Orders were issued to raise the state of alert to the maximum," Oraidi said. "Gaddafi supporters should give up their weapons. Those who do not do so will be considered terrorists."

NTC fighters dragged one man out of an apartment block in Abu Salim, a traditional bastion of support for Gaddafi. As he was kicked and punched, one NTC man tried twice to stab the prisoner only to be blocked each time by another NTC man.

The captured man had been armed with a rocket-propelled grenade, said NTC fighters. The interim government's forces have been criticized by human rights groups for their treatment of prisoners. Reuters saw at least two other captured gunmen taken away in pickup trucks being punched and kicked.

Dominated by apartment blocks, Abu Salim was the last part of the capital to fall to the NTC when its forces took Tripoli on August 23 after six months of civil war.

The NTC fighters were met by volleys of machinegun fire as they went from house to house searching for remaining pro-Gaddafi gunmen. Shooting died down later in the afternoon.

"Some Gaddafi cells came out on the streets with guns today after prayers but, as you can see, our forces have the situation under control," said a senior NTC official at the scene under heavy protection, Mahmoud Abdul Aziz.

"All families are safe. If Gaddafi is still at large we won't see peace but we will slay that beast."

A spokesman for the NTC in the eastern city of Benghazi dismissed Gaddafi's armed supporters in Tripoli as a "fifth column" trying to destabilize the country.

"The other thing I hear that is disturbing is that the fifth column has been doing some drive-by shootings around Tripoli today. These are loyalists trying to wreak havoc," he said.

Diplomats told Reuters that there were also drive-by shootings near the Radisson hotel, where some senior NTC officials and Western diplomats are staying.

SIRTE STILL HOLDING OUT

Gaddafi supporters are still holding out in Sirte, Gaddafi's Mediterranean coastal hometown in the center of the country, where a small pocket is battling on after weeks of fighting, and Bani Walid, a town south of Tripoli.

Government forces pushed tanks deep into Sirte on Friday to try to smash resistance by pro-Gaddafi fighters.

The mostly untrained NTC militia army has gradually tightened its stranglehold around Sirte in a chaotic struggle that has cost scores of lives and left thousands homeless.

The failure to seize the final Gaddafi bastions has also held up the attempt by Libya's new leaders to try to build a democratic government, a process they say will begin only after Sirte is captured.

NTC commanders say Gaddafi's diehard loyalists now only control an area measuring about 700 meters (yards) north to south, and around 1.5 km (a mile) east to west in a residential neighborhood comprising mostly apartment blocks.

"We are going to engage them with tanks and heavy artillery first. After that we will send in the pick-up trucks with anti-aircraft guns, then the infantry," said NTC commander Abdul Hadi Doghman.

The biggest obstacle to taking the town has been Gaddafi's snipers hunkered down in buildings.

Green flags, the banner of Gaddafi's rule, still fly above many of the buildings in Sirte. An occasional sniper shot zipped past government forces cleaning their weapons.

Gaddafi's encircled forces in Sirte have little hope of victory, but still fight on, inflicting casualties with rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and small arms.

Gaddafi himself is believed to be hiding somewhere in the vast desert of southern Libya.

FEAR OF REPRISALS

One NTC commander said Gaddafi's forces were no longer using heavier weapons and appeared to have lost their cohesion.

"We've noticed now they are fighting every man for himself," said Baloun al-Sharie, a field commander. "We tried to tell them it's enough and to give themselves up, but they would not."

NTC officers say Gaddafi loyalists fear reprisals if they surrender -- some captured fighters have been abused.

A Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) doctor at Sirte's Ibn Sina hospital estimated there are still some 10,000 people marooned by the fighting in the city of 75,000 residents. Many of those trapped are women or children and some need medical care.

"In the past few days, the patients haven't been able to receive proper medical care, due to a shortage of doctors and due to the lack of water," said Gabriele Rossi. "The wounds of some patients are really bad and very infected."

Amnesty International issued a report on Wednesday saying Libya's new rulers were in danger of repeating human rights abuses commonplace under Gaddafi. The NTC said it would look into the report.
